Currently in society, there is a plethora of advertisements constantly thrust upon the world, bombarding and disrupting an otherwise peaceful atmosphere. Advertisement is an overbearing and excessive way to deceive the common man, forcing them to become a functioning mechanism in the Capitalist nation driven by consumerism. Advertisement is an art form based on mischievous falsehood to blindly guide the consumer into handing their honestly hard earned profit into the hands of the corrupt corporate industry, who under pays sweatshop workers from foreign, third world nations, and hoards the profits for selfish benefits.
Displays of propaganda and publicity have been around as long as there has been a monitored market economy. During World War II, advertisement had a harsh, powerful impact from every angle of the war. Nazis’ had used publicity to deceive innocent civilians into believing there was a corrupt evil nature in Jews and other ethnic groups. Propaganda was used as promotion against the different nations’ military. Propaganda such as this can be found in almost every war and in any political situation. In politics, if the government possesses intense regulations over the world of advertisement, the publicity will then always force a positive conation on the political leader regulating. This makes the information being told skewed dishonorably to the citizens. If the government does not regulate the advertisements intensely, such as a nation with freedom of speech, then a multitude of angles for each political situation will be displayed. Some angles will be skewed and others will not, therefore the need for people being subjected to them to filter out the false advertisements are evident in both situations.
The participation of the war was due to the displays of objects such as Rosie the Riveter; therefore women began working on the assembly lines, such as Jeep, producing weapons and military vehicles. Women’s activity was due to the advertised idea that the only American option was for women to be strong and assume this role. After the vast impact advertisement had on World War II with the outcome, the corporate monsters of industrialized conjured up the genius idea to commercialize every aspect of living. The media learned to project the idea of a cookie cutter family and community, creating gender roles and extinguishing individuality.
The next step on the take over of society by mass industry was to cling to the housewife image they had created. They used these women as outlets to display products, claiming these women could not survive without these creations by man by presenting unnecessary merchandise as revolutionary. They would display the products visually with the type of women they had promoted as correct for individuals to immolate. This method formatted the media’s influence on body type and status, creating the current social standard for advertisement.
Advertisement is a drug that convinces the user into believing what is being showcased to them is utterly and completely accurate. The user believes they need to mimic what is being forced upon them, causing them to feel as if they are worthless unless they correspond with every aspect the media generates. This aspect of advertisement is what causes the correlation with media to the negative influence on body or self-image. Advertisers will show beautiful, fashionable, skinny women and fit, rich, well-dressed men with their products. This formulates a notion that their commodities can contribute to a consumer leading that specific life style and gaining those specific attributes.
Currently these types of misstated images can be heavily founded far ad wide. A major illustration of this is evident in “As Seen On TV” products and commercials. These materials are items that are not mandatory to survive everyday life, but are shown as so excessively useful that they revolutionize the way the world functions. These contraptions are usually useless, and were made in China by the bare hands of a child being grossly underpaid, suffering from malnutrition, and working deadly hours. The Super Bowl also contributes to this corruption. This major televised event had become an American holiday, manipulating the power of advertisement to the extent that some viewers’ objective is to only watch the event for the advertisement.
Advertisement is a massive, unavoidably characteristic of modern civilization. The purpose of publication is to help promote events and business, which is the ideal role of this service, but that is not what it is functioning as. Once the over industrialized wealth hungry leaders learned the existent of the power advertising has on the views of nations, advertisement was manipulated into the direct use of making money.
